History

In 1993, Rector of University of Hanoi, Prof. Dao Trong Thi has made two important decisions: the establishment of the Department of Geo-Environment in the Faculty of Geography and Geology and the Department of Environmental Post-graduation in the University of Hanoi. The Department of Geo-Environment initially had six staff: Assoc. Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho (Dean of Department), Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hoe (Deputy Dean of Department), Dr. Luu Duc Hai, PhD student Hoang Xuan Co, MSc. Tran Yem and BSc. Nguyen Thi Phuong Loan, after that adding BSc. Le Thi Lan Anh from the Center for Industrial Minerals. Department of Environmental Post-graduation had 2 staff: Prof. Mai Dinh Yen (Dean of Department) and BSc. Dong Kim Loan (support staff) from the Center for Industrial Minerals. Prior to the establishment of the Department of Geo-Environment, the University of Hanoi and the Ministry of Education and Training allowed Faculty of Geography and Geology to enroll 01 extended class with environment major (K36), around 50 students and 18 students for K37. Since 1993, the Department of Geo-Environment has managed and educated a full-time class and a part-time class (K38). Then, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and VNU University of Science was established, a full time class (K39) was enrolled.

In 1995, after the results of a training survey in Australia on the possibility of bachelor degree training in the environment fieldof scientists at VNU University of Science (HUS) (including Prof. Nguyen Can,Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho, Prof. Mai Dinh Yen, et.al); October 21, 1995, Prof. Nguyen Van Dao, Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi(VNU), signed the decision to establish the Faculty of Environmental Sciences (FES) on the basis of the combination of three departments:Geo-Environment of the Faculty of Geography and Geology, SoilSciencesof the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Post-graduation inthe VNU, University of Science. The first listof staff from the Faculty of EnvironmentalScienceswas: Assoc. Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho, Assoc. Prof. Le Van Khoa, Assoc. Prof. Tran Kong Tau, Dr.Nguyen Dinh Hoe,Dr. Hoang Xuan Co, Dr. Luu Duc Hai, Dr.Trinh Thi Thanh, Dr. Van Huy Hai, Dr. Tran Khac Hiep, Dr. Le Duc, Dr. TranCam Van, MSc. Tran Yem, BSc. Nguyen Thi Phuong Loan, BSc. CaiVan Tranh, BSc. Dong Kim Loan, BSc. Le Thi Lan Anh, technicians:Nguyen Thi Soangand Cao TuHong Minh.

In 1996, VNU, University of Science made adecisionto appoint the head of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Accordingly, Assoc. Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho was appointed as Dean of Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Tran Kong Tau and Dr. Hoang Xuan Co was appointed as Deputy Dean of the Faculty. Assoc. Prof. Le Van Khoa was Dean of Soil Sciences Department,  Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hoe was Dean of Natural Resources and Environmental Ecology Department, Dr. Trinh Thi Thanh was Dean of Modeling and Environmental Technology Department, Dr. Luu Duc Hai was Dean of Environmental Management Department. In the years to 2000, faculty staff were continuously added from other units in HUS and graduated students from FES such as: Prof. Nguyen Can; MSc. Nguyen Xuan Cu; MSc. Nguyen Kieu Bang Tam; BSc. Do Thi Moc from Microbiology Center; BSc. Pham Thi Mai, BSc. Trần Thu Phương, Technician: Dang Thi Minh Ha from Mushroom Center; Assoc. Prof. Le Trong Cuc, Assoc. Prof. Le Dien Duc, MSc. Vu Quyet Thang, BSc. Le Van Lanh from CRES; Graduated Students from FES: Pham Thi Viet Anh, Nguyen Quoc Viet, Nguyen Manh Khai, Nguyen Thi Hoang Lien, Dam Duy An.

From 1997 to 2001, FES received the support from Environmental Management Capacity Enhancement Project in Vietnam funded by the European Communities and the Kingdom of Belgium, in which HUS focused to train the master course of Environmental Sciences. With the support of the project and the Management Board of HUS, especially to Prof. Nguyen Can was the head of the project management board, many staff were studied and trained in Belgium. The Center for Environmental Studies and Research was established on the basis of textbooks and teaching materials sponsored by the Kingdom of Belgium and the Flemish Community. The faculty rooms were transferred from B Block in University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the third floor of the T1 Block to 3 floors at T2 Block. The working environment and organization of the Faculty has improved and developed steadily.

In theperiod of 2000-2004, Assoc. Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho was elected as Dean of Faculty; Dr. Trinh Thi Thanh and Dr. Luu Duc Hai was appointed as Deputy Dean of Faculty. Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Ecology changed to Department of Environmental Ecology,  Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hoe was Dean of Department and  Dr. Tran Cam Van was the Deputy Dean of Department. Dr. Hoang Xuan Co was Dean and MSc. Pham Thi Viet Anh was Deputy Dean of Environmental Management Department. Department of Soil Sciences changed to Soil Sciences and Environment, Prof. Le Van Khoa was Dean and  Dr. Le Duc was Deputy Dean of Department. Department of Modeling and Environmental Technology changed to Environmental Technology, Dr. Tran Yem was Dean and Dr. Nguyen Thi Loan was Deputy Dean of Department. In 2001, the Faculty directly received the Capacity Enhancement Project with a budget of 21 billion VND approved by the Ministry of Planning and Investment. In 2003, the Faculty submitted a plan to set up the Research Center for Environmental Monitoring and Modeling. Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho was appointed as the Center’s Director.

In the period of 2004-2009, Assoc. Prof. Luu Duc Hai was elected as Dean of Faculty; Dr. Nguyen Xuan Cu and Dr. Nguyen Thi Ha was appointed as Deputy Dean of Faculty. Assoc. Prof. Le Duc was Dean of Soil Sciences and Environment Department, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Dinh Hoe was Dean of Environmental Management Department, Assoc. Prof. Hoang Xuan Co was Dean of Environmental Ecology Department, Dr. Tran Yem was Dean of Environmental Technology Department and Prof. Pham Ngoc Ho was Director of Research Center for Environmental Monitoring and Modeling. In the period of 2004 up to now, many faculty staff have been appointed as associate professors: Assoc. Prof. Vu Quyet Thang, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Cu, Assoc. Prof. Tran Yem, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Loan, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Hai, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Ha, Assoc. Prof. Le Van Thien, Assoc. Prof. Dong Kim Loan. Many staff have successfully defended their doctoral dissertations: Vu Van Manh, Nguyen Manh Khai, Nguyen Ngoc Minh, Nguyen Kieu Bang Tam, Nguyen Thi Hoang Lien; Some staff transferred from other organizations such as Dr. Tran Van Quy, Dr. Le Duc Minh and Assoc. Prof. Tran Van Thuy. In 2005, HUS officially assigned FES to organize and train the undergraduate program in Environmental Technology. In 2009, the Ministry of Education and Training assigned HUS and FES to jointly train advanced program in environmental sciences with Indiana University, USA.

In the period of 2009-2013, many senior staff were reaching retirement age. Besides the dean of the Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Luu Duc Hai, all Faculty managers have changed: 2 Deputy Dean of the Faculty were Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Hai and Dr. Nguyen Manh Khai; Dr. Vu Van Manh was Dean of Environmental Management Department, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Cu was Dean of Soil Sciences and Environment, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Ha was Dean of Environmental Technology Department. Assoc. Prof. Tran Van Thuy was Dean of Environmental Ecology Department, Assoc. Prof. Hoang Xuan Co was Director of Research Center for Environmental Monitoring and Modeling and Dr. Tran Van Quy was Head of Environmental Analysis Laboratory. The heavy task requires the staffs and leaders of the Faculty to unite, focus the force maintain and develop training and research activities of FES.

In the period of 2013 – 2018, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Hai was elected as Dean of the Faculty, 02 Deputy Dean of the Faculty (Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khai and Assoc. Prof. Le Van Thien) and Dean of the departments continue to work as the previous period.

In the period of 2019-2023, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khai has been elected as Dean of Faculty and be continuing in the process of consolidating the organization.
